Starting towards the end of 2021, smartphones equipped with the next Snapdragon SoC will be available for purchase.

At Wednesday’s annual Snapdragon Tech Summit, Qualcomm revealed its new 5G mobile platform, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Next-generation flagship Android smartphones will incorporate the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor.

As the first chip to bear the new Snapdragon name, introduced when the San Diego-based business introduced its 17 Snapdragon 800 series system-on-chip (SoC) versions, the chip is significant. In terms of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC is estimated to perform 4x faster than the Snapdragon 888 SoC.

The manufacturer would provide 30 percent quicker graphics rendering while simultaneously delivering 25 percent more power economy than its predecessor. Additionally, Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is the world’s first 5G modem-RF combination capable of delivering 10 Gigabit download rates on a suitable network.

Schedule for launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor is expected to be used by worldwide smartphone manufacturers, including Black Shark, Honor, iQoo, Motorola, Nubia, and OnePlus. It will also be used by other companies such as Sharp and Sony. Qualcomm has said that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 would be used by other Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE. According to the business, phones based on the new technology should be available by the end of 2021.

Specifications for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor

Compared with the Snapdragon 888, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will feature the 7th Generation Qualcomm AI Engine, which will reportedly provide twice the shared memory and twice the tensor accelerator’s speed compared with the tensor accelerator the Snapdragon 888. This will result in better per-watt performance than the 6th Gen Qualcomm AI Engine currently available on the Snapdragon 888. In addition, the new chip will be built using a 4nm manufacturing technique. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 was built on a 5nm manufacturing technology, replaced by this newer technology this year.

According to Qualcomm, the actual names of the Kryo CPU and Adreno GPU that will be accessible on its new chip have not yet been released. However, the Kryo CPU is distinguished by Arm Cortex-X2 cores, which can operate at speeds up to 3GHz. The CPU is 20 percent quicker in performance and 30 percent more energy-efficient than its predecessor, featured on the Snapdragon 888. In addition, the new Adreno GPU is expected to provide a 30 percent increase in graphics rendering and a 25 percent gain in power savings over its predecessor.

Artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge and expertise

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 features the Qualcomm Hexagon processor, which is offered as a component of the AI Engine, which allows for a more advanced artificial intelligence (AI) experience. In addition, the chip incorporates Leica Leitz Look filters for a more improved bokeh effect while shooting with the camera. The Hugging Face machine learning community has developed an AI-based natural language processing system. Because it analyses and prioritizes your alerts, it provides a more personalized personal service experience.

Qualcomm said it collaborated with Boston’s Sonde Health to develop a system that can analyze a person’s voice to gauge their risk of illnesses such as asthma, depression, and even COVID-19. It is also equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon Hub, the third generation to handle data streams utilizing low-power artificial intelligence.

Regarding gaming, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 boasts over 50 Snapdragon Elite Gaming features that provide a smooth and responsive experience while also displaying vibrant colors in High Dynamic Range (HDR). According to the business, this version has a Variable Rate Shading Pro feature, which allows for realistic fog, smoke, and particle effects at the desktop level.

Sound and connection are important considerations.

In addition to Qualcomm aptX Lossless Technology and Snapdragon Sound Technology, the new Snapdragon mobile platform offers a better audio experience with Qualcomm aptX. Low-energy (LE) features including broadcast audio, stereo recording, and voice back-channel for gaming are also introduced.

Qualcomm has incorporated its Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System into the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 can reach download speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second. It has also preserved the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 Mobile Connection System, which provides wireless connectivity between the Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E standards at up to 3.6Gbps simultaneously as the previous generation. Aside from that, Bluetooth v5.2 is supported.

Technology of Sight

The Snapdragon Sight Technology, the first 18-bit image signal processor, included in a smartphone, is the second major innovation to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. (ISP). At up to 3.2 gigapixels per second, it is said to record nearly 4,000 times more camera data than its predecessor, resulting in improved high dynamic range, color, and sharpness, as well as faster processing times. The new ISP allows 8K HDR video recording in the premium HDR10+ format, a first for the industry. Furthermore, a specialized Bokeh Engine can create soft backdrops for videos. An Always-on Internet Service Provider (ISP) is also available, allowing always-on face unlocking without depleting the battery.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1’s other characteristics and features align with its predecessor, the Snapdragon 820. In addition to 4K and QHD+ screens, with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz, 3200MHz LPDDR5 RAM with a maximum density of 16GB, and Quick Charge compatibility, the phone features up to a 144Hz refresh rate.
